Community guidelines
Version 2026-10, last updated 26 October 2026
StudentSoc is for finding your people at uni. Treat everyone the way you'd want your society treated, and these mostly take care of themselves.
1. Be decent to each other
- No harassment, bullying, threats or pile-ons.
- No hate based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or age.
- No sexual content, and nothing sexual involving anyone under 18, ever.
- Don't encourage violence or self-harm.
2. Respect people's privacy
- Don't share anyone's personal details, messages or location without their permission.
- Never out anyone. Being a member of an LGBTQ+, faith, political or cultural society is private unless that person chose to show it.
- Ask before you post photos of people. The photo policy has the details.
3. Be honest
- Don't pretend to be another person, club or the Students' Union.
- No spam, scams, pyramid schemes or fake events.
- Label anything you're paid or rewarded to post as sponsored.
- Only post work you made or have permission to use.
4. For committees
- Keep event details accurate, and update or cancel events promptly so people aren't left stranded.
- No initiations or socials that pressure people to drink, take risks or do anything humiliating.
- Make it easy to join without drinking. Many students don't drink.
- Handle member details as the private information they are, and hand the club over properly at the end of your year.
6. Our word filter
Comments are checked against a list of words, including slurs, threats and self-harm phrases, plus any words a club adds for itself. If a comment matches, it's held for the committee to check before anyone else sees it. If it mentions self-harm, we also show where to get support.
7. Blocking and muting
- Block someone from any of their comments. You won't see each other's comments. If they were shown as “A member”, blocking them never tells you who they are.
- Mute a thread to stop notifications from it.
- Committees can mute someone in their club for 24 hours, 7 days or until the end of the academic year. A muted person can still read, but can't comment there. We never tell them which committee member did it, and they can appeal to us.
- Committees can also lock a thread, turn comments off, limit them to members, or slow a busy thread down.
8. Nothing illegal
No selling or promoting drugs, weapons or anything else illegal, and no content that breaks UK law.
9. Reporting
See something that breaks these guidelines? Use Report on the post, comment, event, photo, club or profile. Reports go to our moderators, not to the club, and we don't tell anyone who reported them.
We'll let you know when we've looked at it, usually within 3 days, or within 24 hours if it might be illegal or a child could be at risk. Depending on what we find, we may remove the content, suspend the account or club, or take no action.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 999. If you're struggling, Samaritans are there day or night on 116 123, and your university's wellbeing team can help too.
10. What happens if rules are broken
Minor problems usually mean the content comes down, or a short mute in that club. Serious or repeated problems can mean a suspended account or club. Suspended people can still download their data and delete their account. If you think we or a committee got it wrong, you can appeal and a platform moderator will look at it again from scratch. The terms explain how.
