Nightlife guidelines
Version 2026-10, last updated 26 October 2026
Committees agree to these once, the first time they post an event involving alcohol. They follow UK advertising rules (the CAP Code) and licensing law, and in a few places go further, because some of our users are 17.
1. 18+ means 18+
- Mark an event 18+ whenever the venue or the plan requires it. Attendees then confirm they're 18 or over before they can RSVP.
- Someone whose date of birth shows they're under 18 can't RSVP to an 18+ event, whatever they tick.
- Never aim alcohol promotion at under-18s. Many freshers are 17.
- When paid promotion arrives, nightlife promotion will only be shown to people who've passed the 18+ check.
2. Images: no people
UK advertising rules say anyone shown in alcohol promotion must be, and look, 25 or over. Rather than judge ages from a photo, our rule is simpler: event covers and promo images for nights out show the venue, the theme or graphics, not people.
No images of people drinking, drunk, or in sexualised poses.
Photos people add to your event's Recap afterwards follow the nights-out list in the photo policy, and Recaps of 18+ or alcohol events are only shown to people who are 18 or over.
3. What you can't say
- No drink prices or deals (“£1 drinks”, “bottomless”, “free shots”).
- No drinking games, and nothing like “drink as much as you can”. These are banned by licensing law.
- Don't link drinking with popularity, confidence, sex or success.
- Don't make drinking sound like the point of the night, or a test.
4. What good looks like
- Show the all-in entry price, including any fees.
- Say what non-alcoholic options there are, so non-drinkers know they're welcome.
- Share welfare info: first aid, anti-spiking measures, how people get home.
- Give the time of last entry and any dress code or ID rules.
5. Sponsorship and paid promotion
- If a venue or promoter pays or rewards you for an event or post, mark it sponsored. StudentSoc shows the label; never hide it.
- No drinks-brand sponsorship for now.
- Bars and clubs advertising on StudentSoc follow our advertising policy.
6. Your responsibilities
Venues are responsible for their licence; committees are responsible for running their event safely and following Students' Union rules. If an event breaks these guidelines we may remove it, and repeated problems can lead to the club being suspended.
